CBD for Dogs

I don’t know how many times I have been “told” I should bake CBD cookies for dogs. There are two reasons why I don’t:

  1. I would need another kitchen and special CBD license to produce the CBD dog treats.

  2. Personally, I am firm believer of administering CBD oil directly to your dog yourself, therefore you know the dosage and the quality of the product you are giving your pup, rather than purchasing a bag of CBD dog treats from your local pet store and not knowing the quality of the CBD oil (or dog treat) or how much is actually in the the dog treat! More on this at the bottom of the blog.

However, we do now sell CBD oil in our K9CRACK shop https://k9crack.com/shop/

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, and as its name suggests, it comes from the cannabis plant. However, CBD doesn’t contain THC, the ingredient in marijuana that induces a high. For many humans, CBD is an effective treatment for anxiety and other conditions, such as seizure disorders, but extensive research about the long term effects of treating dogs for these ailments is still underway. Nevertheless, the prognosis for the majority of dogs appears to be positive.

“Use of CBD with pets is a very new trend,” says Dr. Marcus Dela Cruz, DVM, owner of The Friendly Vet. “Because of legal restrictions, not much research has been done by pharmaceutical companies into how CBD could benefit pets. However, as CBD laws have changed, more studies are being performed.” (Dog Wellness Trends: Which Are Worth Exploring? By Jean Bauhaus Sep 01, 2021).

Initial Research is Promising

Initial research shows some promise in using CBD to treat dogs. “There are some indications that CBD can be useful in the treatment of pain, inflammation, anxiety, and nausea,” says Dr. Jennifer Coates, DVM, who serves on the advisory board for Pet News Daily. “A few published papers provide evidence that CBD can be effective in the management of canine epilepsy and osteoarthritis.” (Dog Wellness Trends: Which Are Worth Exploring? By Jean Bauhaus Sep 01, 2021)

Vets are cautious about getting fully on board because research on treating dogs with CBD is still in its infancy and lacks published papers regarding the long-term effects of CBD on dogs.

Get Your CBD From a Reputable Source

Dr. Dela Cruz, who also stresses the importance of obtaining CBD from a reputable source that provides both a certificate of analysis and a third-party evaluation of safety and effectiveness. “CBD products are notorious for having contaminants–like THC, which is toxic to pets–or not containing the amount of CBD that they claim on their label.” Dr. Coates agrees, and also adds, “Many CBD products [for pets] actually contain very little CBD.”

CBD Hemp Oil for Dogs

“CBD is one of hundreds of compounds found in cannabis called Cannabinoids. Unlike it’s cousin, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not cause the user to feel high or impaired in any way. While THC is found in high concentrations in Marijuana, CBD comes from industrial Hemp plants (a form of Cannabis Sativa) that are high in CBD and contain less than 0.3 percent by law.” (from https://godsglorycbd.com/what-is-cbd/). So little research has been conducted into the benefits of CBD on people and their pets because, up until recently, it was illegal.

As a therapeutic cannabinoid, isolated CBD oil is safe and non-psychoactive. It stimulates the bodies endocannabinoid system to promote overall healing and wellness.

How Does CBD Oil Work?

The endocannabinoid system is an interconnected chain of receptors found in the brain, nervous system, glands, and organs. It controls health and healing and maintains balance within the body. All mammals, including humans and dogs, rely on the endocannabinoid system to regulate immune response. CBD oil opens communication between endocannabinoid receptors to allow the body to increase or decrease the immune response as needed. “CBD is the natural way of regulating the system to maintain the perfect balance.” (godsglorycbd.com)

What Are Dog Owners Using CBD Oil for?

There are a lot of reasons dog owners are using CBD oil, here are just some of them:

  • Joint pain and inflammation, especially in older dogs

  • Lack of appetite

  • Separation anxiety

  • Excessive barking

  • Nausea on car rides

  • Stressful car rides or trips to the vet or groomer

  • Muscle spasms or seizures

  • Aid in recovery from surgery or illness

  • Pacing or inability to relax

  • Fear of thunderstorms, fireworks, or loud noises

  • Aggression towards other dogs

  • Constant itching or allergies

How do I Choose a Quality CBD Oil for My Dog?

Choosing a high-quality hemp oil product can be confusing, the market is huge and not all hemp products are created equal. K9CRACK works very closely with another Southern Oregon based business Gods Glory Hemp Company (https://godsglorycbd.com/), to bring you the cleanest, purest CBD hemp oil for your dog. While the average strain of marijuana contains between 15%-30% THC (the oil that gets you high), hemp-derived CBD oil contains less than 0.3%. This amount is so low it is impossible to get your dog high.

What are the Side Effects or Risks of Giving CBD to my Dog?

Initial studies show that CBD oil is safe for dogs, but as with everything, it is always wise to start with small doses. Therefore, introduce CBD oil slowly and be alert for possible side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Dry mouth

  • Tremors

  • Lightheadedness

  • Drowsiness

  • Diarrhea or Vomiting

  • Increased appetite

However, CBD oil may also interact with other medications your dog is taking, therefore speak to a knowledgeable veterinarian about proper dosing and possible side effects before administering CBD oil to your dog.

Suggested Dosage for Dogs Using 'Love Your Pet' CBD Oil

Clint Thompson at Gods Glory Hemp Company recommends applying the CBD oil directly into your dog’s mouth using the plastic dropper provided:

  • Up to 25lbs start with ¼ dropper per day

  • 25-50lbs start with ½ dropper per day

  • 50-75lbs start with ¾ dropper per day

  • 80+ Use a full dropper or more as indicated

Every dog responds differently to CBD oil, therefore we encourage you to start small and slow. Always observe your dog after giving them a new supplement for the first time. CBD oil can also be given in food or on your dog’s favorite K9CRACK Love Snack, however the effects will take longer when using food. Here is a general rule of thumb:

  • Giving CBD directly into your dog’s mouth (sublingually) – Allow 20-60 minutes

  • Giving CBD in your dog’s food or on a dog treat – Allow 45-90 minutes

For more chronic issues it may take 2-4 weeks to see optimal results, especially as you work out how much your dog needs to get relief.

And Finally

I personally use Love Your Pet CBD oil and I have purchased it for Action Jackson, our Hound from the Pound. On more than one occasion I have used Jackson’s CBD oil myself when I have run out and cannot sleep (Georgie at K9CRACK). We love the Peanut Butter Flavor!
